Agricultural Products

Agricultural products are an important component of the economy, accounting significantly to the volume of domestic exports. With its ever-widening range of fruit and vegetables, Cyprus has quite justifiably gained a reputation in international markets as “the garden of the Mediterranean”.

Primary fresh produce such as potatoes, citrus fruit, grapes, melons, vegetables and aromatic herbs, as well as a number of Secondary agrifood products such as the ever so popular Halloumi cheese, wines, fruit and vegetable juices, and meat and fish products are already making headway in international markets.

Since EU accession in 2004, both primary and secondary agricultural exports have had to comply with the stringent European phytosanitary standards and quality thresholds.

Fruits & Vegetables

With its ever widening range of fruit and vegetables, Cyprus has quite justifiably gained a reputation in international markets as “the garden of the Mediterranean”. Production of fruit and vegetables has been further enhanced by the completion of a massive irrigation scheme which has opened up an additional 40.000 acres of fertile coastal land.

Olive Oil

Cultivation of olive trees in Cyprus goes way back in the history of the island, the archaeological discoveries prove that they were cultivated on the island already 4000 years ago, and that there was an olive press in the vicinity of Limassol 1000 B.C. In modern times the greatest development of olives cultivation took place in the 1930s of the 20th century. Between 1946 and 1958 the number of olive trees increased by 40% and they have become the most numerous non-forest trees.

Halloumi

Halloumi is nowadays produced in technologically advanced dairy industries approved and registered according to the strictest EU regulations. Dairy industries in Cyprus are also certified with the HACCP (Hazard analysis and Critical Control Points) and enforce the ISO, a quality system ensuring maximum quality and hygiene.
